Cut six pieces of heavy duty foil and six squares of parchment paper (optional). If you choose to use the parchment paper, place one piece on top of each piece of foil.
Cut your rolls in half and create an assembly line.
(Optional) Spread a thin layer of softened cream cheese on both the top and the bottom of the rolls. This helps keep the sauce from soaking into the bread if you plan on keeping them in the freezer for a while. If you will be cooking and eating these soon, it is not necessary.
Spread a thin layer of sauce on each side of your roll. Personally, I love a saucy pizza, but it is not a good idea to use too much sauce while camping.
(Optional) Sprinkle some dried herbs such as basil, oregano, or some sort of pizza mixture on top of your sauce. We especially like Penzey's Pizza Seasoning for topping ours.
Layer some cheese, then your pizza toppings, then another layer of cheese on the bottom of the roll. Don’t be too generous. You want your roll to stay together while you eat it.
Next, layer the top of the roll back over your toppings and cheese.
Place your roll on top of your parchment paper on top of your heavy duty foil. If I’m not using the parchment paper, I will use two layers of foil as it helps prevent the pizza roll from burning. It also aids in more even heat distribution.
Place your pizza rolls in a large zip top bag and refrigerate up to three days or freeze until time to go camping.
