What happens when one of us wants to make Philly Cheesesteaks while camping and the other one gets inspired to cook the steak first? We move the Philly Cheesesteaks to the second night on the menu and cook up Pie Iron Steak that first night!
The first time we made this at a State Park, the ranger on her drive through of the campsites had to stop and find out what smelled so good. We introduced ourselves and even offered to plate her up some steak dinner but she needed to continue on her rounds. Which was lucky because that ensured we had enough leftovers for those Philly Cheesesteaks the next night. However, even if we weren’t planning on making those, this recipe is simply amazing.

Who doesn’t love food cooked over a campfire? Actually we know a lot of people who don’t and we just have to feel sorry for them. Because we love to cook over a campfire, especially in a pie iron. These are sometimes called camp cookers, pudgy pies, or even hobo pies, but we use the term pie iron. Whatever you choose to call it, know that these trusty tools make extremely delicious food cooked over the campfire.
What we love about Pie Iron Steak:
- It is quick and easy
- Meat can be seasoned any way you like
- They can be cooked over wood, charcoal, or gas
- Recipe doesn’t require lots of fancy ingredients
- You are eating steak at a campsite!
The Ingredients:
- Oil (so your steak doesn’t stick)
- Seasonings (salt & pepper or a mixed blend-we love Penzey’s for our spices)
- Steak (we prefer a London Broil cut for this)
The Process:
- (Optional) Preheat your pie irons over the fire while getting your supplies ready.
- Oil insides of pie iron and sprinkle liberally with preferred seasonings.
- Cut steak to fit inside of pie iron. We typically use one of our double irons for this.
- Place steak inside of pie iron, close.
- Place on coals and cook, flipping every six minutes or so. Remove when it reaches your preferred doneness.
Equipment needed:
- Pie iron(s): We have a double pie iron from Rome, a double from Field & Stream, two singles from Field & Stream, and two single Coghlan’s Camp Cookers. Pie irons also come in circles and waffle versions. We recommend a square or rectangle for this recipe.
- Silicone brush: We love using a simple silicone brush for oiling up our pie irons prior to inserting the food.
- Heat resistant gloves: If you are going to be working around a fire, at some point you will probably get burned. These gloves can help prevent that.
